We know — there are archipelagos everywhere in Sweden. There are thousands of islands. Here on the Bjäre peninsula we have just one. And it's called Hallands Väderö, even though it lies in Skåne. Is it really worth bragging about? Well, yes it is. Hallands Väderö Forever is a little tribute to this nature reserve that will always be in our hearts.

Lovable thing number one: getting there
Väderötrafiken departs from Torekov harbour (in high season also from Båstad harbour). The old boat Nanny is the favourite. It all feels pleasantly unhurried and a little old-fashioned. It's not a long trip out to sea — it's just exactly right. For families with children in particular, the boat ride is an adventure in the perfect format. If you're lucky, you have your own boat or friends with one. Then it feels even more like the archipelago, and you can moor in one of several natural harbours on the island. Just keep an eye on the nautical chart, as you can't take a boat just anywhere.
Lovable thing number two: the wealth of species
Harbour seals — protected, but now plentiful around the island — are often seen from the boat or the island, or on a dedicated seal safari. Either way, there's something exotic about all these seals. The island, a nature reserve, also has stretches of coast and skerries reserved for nesting seabirds. Birdwatchers can look out for black guillemot, razorbill and common guillemot nesting on the island. There's also the adder — the all-black variety! For its size, Hallands Väderö is one of Sweden's most species-rich areas.
Lovable thing number three: the snorkelling
The water is as clear as the Mediterranean and perfect for snorkelling. And it's fairly easy to find a little cove all to yourself somewhere around Hallands Väderö.
Lovable thing number four: the grazing animals
The open landscape of Hallands Väderö is kept in trim by an army of grazing animals. They too arrive by boat and roam free there all season. Cattle, Icelandic horses and plenty of ewes and lambs may cross your path as you hike.
Lovable thing number five: an exclusive overnight stay
You can rent apartments on the island, but you need to be well ahead of time, a member of the Church of Sweden and have a bit of general luck. For a few years now there's also been Skogvaktargården, a hostel you can book for a night or more. Staying there, in all its simplicity, feels wonderfully exclusive.
